White Pine Programs is an outdoor school in Southern Maine focused on nature-based learning for children ages 7-17. I was an instructor for three of their year-round programs: Wilderness Skills for Homeschoolers, Young Naturalists, and Outdoor Girls, as well as for the summer camp. We led one camp-out per season (yes, including winter!) and one end-of-the-year camping trip in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey.
We used experiencial activities, group games, and storytelling to teach children about landscape ecology, animal tracking, native plants, navigation, shelter-building, and fire-making, to name a few.
