Natural History
Upward Bound (UB) is a college preparatory program for “at-risk” high school students. I worked for UB for three summers, two at UNH, and one at UMaine. “Natural History” was about becoming better acquainted with nature.
Being outside all the time was a challenge for some, especially for those who lived in the city, but it was also incredibly rewarding. We went on a barefoot creek walk, made cattail flower flour pancakes, drank white pine needle tea, and examined animal tracks and sign. We supplemented outdoor time with readings, botany lessons, and discussions.
